As a 350-bed tertiary care facility in Houston, TX., Spring Branch Medical Center has developed a consistent reputation for excellence during its 44-year history. In addition to pioneering stomach banding surgery, Spring Branch Medical Center (SBMC) has achieved the following milestones:

  • The first hospital outside the Texas Medical Center to perform open heart surgery.
  • The first hospital in the area to perform the iliac stent procedure.
  • The first wound care center on the Texas Gulf Coast.
  • One of the few community-based cancer programs to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons.
  • One of a select group of hospitals accredited -with commendation - by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Spring Branch Medical Center's Radiation Oncology Department directed by Robert A. Behar, M.D., has expanded that tradition of pioneering medicine by:

  • Recently introducing Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
  • Being the first in Houston to treat prostate cancer using High-Dose Rate (HDR) Remote Afterloading (2000) and transrectal ultrasound-guided radioactive palladium seed implants (1998)
  • Being the first in the area to treat potentially terminal primary and metastatic tumors using Body Radiosurgery (1999)

Today, more than 600 physicians representing 53 specialties and 900 employees led by Pat Currie, president and chief executive officer, make Spring Branch Medical Center "the premier community medical center" in Houston.

Spring Branch Medical Center (SBMC) is one of the few community hospitals in recent years to be recognized as one of the Top 100 Hospitals in America.
